- Started in 1999 with the primary aim to produce optometrist for self
- Started with Diploma course of 3 years affiliated to Federation of Ophthalmic Research and Education, New Delhi
- No degree course was available in Maharashtra at that time
- YCMOU came out with 4 year degree course in Optometry in 2006
- Same year LCO got recognition for the same
- Switched over to degree from diploma in 2006
- In 2010 LCO got recognized by Maharashtra State for MCVC 2 years course of Diploma in Ophthalmic Techniques
- Started with 3 students in 1999 in a batch
- Had to work very hard to create an awareness about optometry as a profession and the scope
- Had to work hard to get students. Could not get full strength till current year
- Emphasis in practical training along with theory was always the plus point of LCO
- Courses at Laxmi college of Optometry
- 4 years Degree course includes one year Paid Internship affiliated to Yashwantrao Chaven Maharashtra Open University. Eligibility – 12th Science with minimum 50% Marks
- Laxmi Charitable Trust – a parent body of Laxmi College of Optometry – founded by eminent Ophthalmic Surgeon – Dr. Suhas Haldipurkar in 1999, with the aim to provide quality eye care to one & all.
- 75% of total population of Raigad District is in rural area, where access to even primary eye care is very rare.
- This emphasizes the need of community outreach program to provide primary eye care.
- This can be achieved by conducting eye camps and setting up primary eye care centers in rural area.
- Trained personnel is the necessity of such activities.
- Laxmi Charitable Trust since 1999 have conducted 1012 free eye camps and has performed more than 26000 free cataract surgeries.
- Laxmi College of Optometry is able to provide some of the trained personnel required for such activities of the Trust
- To produce such trained personnel to provide eye care to all is the main aim of Laxmi College of Optometry.

- Optometry is an independent primary health care profession which emphasis on prevention and remediation of disorders of visual system through examination, diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders

- Ophthalmologist- Medical Doctor specializing in eye disease and surgery
- Optometrist - Primary eye care provider
- Optician -Fit, grind and dispense spectacles
Need of Optometrist
- Under Vision 2020 program WHO has a goal to provide workable vision to all by treating avoidable blindness till year 2020
- To achieve this we require 2 ophthalmologists and 10 Optometrist per 1,00,000 population
Present Scenario in India
- Requirement of Optometrists: 1,16,000
- Available optometrist: Approx. 40,000+
- Bachelors optometrist: 2,500
- With the present number the goal is very far
- The nation needs to produce many more qualified optometrist to cater primary eye care
- Many more number of optometry colleges are required to produce more optometrists
- Total Optometry Colleges in India = 125
